Justice Alphonse Owiny-Dollo who has been acting chief justice since June 22 this year has risen to attain a full position of chief justice a most senior position in the judiciary. the judge assumed acting position after retirement of Justice Bart Katurebe whom he deputised.
The new chief justice holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Makerere University, post graduate diploma in law from Law Development Centre, a masters degree of Arts in Conflict Management from Bradford University in the United Kingdom.He has been a judge of high court where he handled a famous trial of 13 suspects of 2011 twin bombings, and court of appeal as the head and deputy chief justice role since 2017.
Other roles he has played include; participation in peace talks with the lords resistance army, delegate of the constituent assembly from 1994-1996 that saw promulgation of the 1995 Constitution, Member of Parliament representing Agago County from 1996-2001.
President Yoweri Museveni has also appointed Justice Richard Butera to replace the newly appointed chief justice as his deputy. Justice Richard Butera had earlier been appointed to head the Judicial Service Commission.
